Pacific Lace Shawl

I love the pretty teals of this yarn. It reminds me of summer, so I matched it up with an airy, lacy pattern. This scarf is a triangle worked on the bias, so it is not a symmetrical triangle.
I used one skein of KnitPicks Stroll Fingering in Pacific Tonal with size 6 circular needles to accommodate the large number of stitches.

CO 3, long tail
Row 1: k2, kfb
Row 2: kfb, k to last 2 sts, k2 tog
Row 3: k to last st, kfb

Rep rows 2 and 3 for the solid sections.
So every other row 2 will have an even number of sts, and the other row 2 will have an odd number. This is because it increases 1 stitch every two rows, and the pattern repeat is only two rows long, so one time it will be even and the next it will be odd.

For the even rows:
Row 1: kfb, *yo, k2tog; rep from * to last 3 sts, k1, k2tog
Row 2: k to last st, kfb

For the odd rows:
Row 1: kfb, *yo, k2tog; rep from * to end to last 2 sts, k2tog
Row 2: k to last st, kfb

I wouldn't bother counting the sts to determine if it's an even or odd row, I would just knit the lace pattern of (yo, k2tog) until the last few sts and see if there needs to be another st or not before the k2tog.

Randomly do big and small sections of the solid knitting and the lace pattern. This will give it a nice, random, lacy look.
When you're almost out of yarn, BO using Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off, or another stretchy one.
Fasten off, and weave in ends.
I blocked this to open up the lace. Blocking gave this scarf a fantastic drape!
Since this is a triangle worked on the bias, it is not perfectly symmetrical. From the center point to the top it is 15". From end to end, along the longest side, it is 107". This makes it the perfect narrow scarf, since the ends are very skinny and the deepest part isn't too wide. I wrap the ends a few times, which helps make it more secure.
Enjoy!
Xoxo, Alyssa

    1. Kfb means knit front back. You knit into the front of the st, and then without dropping the st off the left needle, knit into the back st, and then drop the st off the needle.

  2. So happy I found your site! Can you please tell me what "I wrap the ends a few times, which helps make it more secure" means :-( Thanks so much

    1. Since the scarf is pretty long, I just wrap it around my neck an extra time. This just helps get the ends out of the way and it does make the shawl less likely to fall off.

  4. Olá! a minha duvida, é somente estes pontos, que tenho que fazer, ou tem mais descrição? E qual o n° da agulha.
    Obrigada.

  5. While the pattern took me several reads to understand, I am thrilled that you published a pattern that uses one skein AND is
Long enough to wrap around my neck a couple times

  6. This has become my favorite shawl pattern. I always come back to it, and it's a great first time shawl. I've made this in a variety of yarns.

  7. So far I am enjoying your pattern. I am just a little confused about when i should stop increasing and begin decreasing, so I have skinny ends.

    1. There are no decreasing rows in this pattern. The triangle shape is made just with the increasing rows.

  8. Why is it that I cannot figure this pattern out? I have been knitting rows 2 and 3 but when do you begin the "even " rows1&2 and "odd"rows1. & 2 ?

    1. I did random sections of lace. The even and odd rows are for the lace, and depend on whether you have an even or odd number of stitches. This changes because you increase one stitch every other row. You can start the lace sections at any time, and alternate with garter sections, which is just rows 2 and 3.

  9. Beautiful shawl Alyssa. Could you tell me if this could be worn as a wrap around the shoulders? Is it wide enough for that? Thank you

    1. The shawl is long and narrow, so it may work for being wrapped around the shoulders. If you want something that would cover more of your back, I knit think this would work that well since it's pretty narrow, at 15".

  11. Look for an addition to your browser called Print Friendly. It'll go into your top bar so you can use it when necessary. It will allow you to create a pdf or to print it. I hope that helps. Alyssa, I believe that this is something that you can add to your website to allow folk to pdf or print your wonderful patterns. I'll be using Print Friendly for this pattern. Thank you!

  12. I don't understand the pattern. If I follow the instructions, I keep increasing the number of stitches. How does the scarf get narrow again to sorm a triangle?

    1. The scarf is knit on the bias so you don’t need to decrease the stitches. I’m sure it will make sense to you if you start working it up.

  13. Do you work two triangle sections then knit them together? Otherwise it just keeps increasing and never decreases to form the other side

    ReplyDelete

    1. It never decreases, just increases to form a random triangle. You do not knit the sections separately but go back and forth changing. Remember, this is an asymmetrical shawl and will look “off” not a perfect triangle.

    2. Yes, exactly. There’s no decrease section, but the increasing forms the triangle.

  14. It toke me several times to read your pattern till it clicked in my brains what had to be done.
Easy as pie once the light came on.

  16. when i cast on 3 sts then i just repeat rows 1 and 2 until it measures 15 inch or longer please let me know i really want to knit this thanks

    1. You alternate the lace sections and the solid sections, but both are just two row repeats. Knit for as long as you like, mine is 15" from the center point to the top after blocking.

  17. I will come back to this one and see if it "clicks" in my brain. I don't understand how there can be so many Row 1's and Row 2's. Do you just randomly choose which Row 1 or Row 2 you want to do?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can randomly choose when you want to do lace or garter to make the random design of the scarf. The upper portion of the pattern says to repeat rows 2 & 3 for the garter section. One set of rows 1 & 2 is the even rows, and the other set of rows 1 & 2 is the odd rows. Both of these are for the lace sections of the scarf. I wouldn't recommend counting the stitches before knitting the row, just knit to the last few stitches to see if there needs to be an extra k stitch before doing the k2tog. As labeled in the pattern, the even rows will have an extra k stitch before the k2tog.

    2. Thanks Alyssa! I was just coming back to say that it clicked!! I had to start knitting it to see it. So in my mind, the very first row is a one-time row, then I re-numbered the next two as one and two, I have 3 sets of rows one and two to work with. One is the garter and the other two are the lace. Excited to see how mine comes out!
      Thanks for the beautiful pattern.

  18. Hey Alyssa, It's me again. I cannot find the yarn that you used. Can you tell me how many yards and maybe a substitute yarn that would work? Is it a sock yarn? Thanks again.

    1. Knit Picks doesn't seem to sell the color I used anymore, but here is the link to the yarn. https://www.knitpicks.com/yarn/stroll-tonal/c/5420134
The website says 462 yards per skein. It is a fingering weight yarn, but you could use any yarn you like, just be sure to change the needle size if you need to. Gauge doesn't matter much with this pattern, it's more personal preference.
      Hope this helps!

  19. I don't remember where I found this pattern, but when we took our daughter to Seattle for a graduation celebration weekend, we ended up at Pike Place Market and there was a vendor selling yarn. I fell in love with a fingering yarn in a similar blue to your scarf and bought 2 skeins. I used one entire skein and just kept knitting until I could see that there was probably just enough to bind off. I do have to say that I was a bit confused with the instructions, so started this project a couple of times, pulled everything out and restarted. I think on the third time, the pattern finally clicked and I kept going until I was finished. I did use that super stretchy bind off, but chose to do one bind off with the yarn over stitch and the next with a regular knit bind off, so one stretchy bind off, one knit bind off until the end. I ended up with only a 1" strand to weave in, so definitely cut it close. I started this in May 2019 and finally finished it today 2.21.21. My plan was to start in May 2019 and finish before we went to France in July 2019, but as you can see, that didn't happen. Although, I did bring it with me on our trip & knit on the plane and the long train rides. I don't always have a lot of time to knit, mostly just for an hour each Sunday, but I'm so thrilled it is finally finished! I so wish there was a way to add a photo of the finished project for everyone to see.
