Stormy Lace Cowl

This soft, fluffy, single plied yarn creates a delightful lacy cowl. The lacy texture is perfect for spring, with a soft neutral color to match so much in your wardrobe.
I used one skein of Knit Picks Preciosa Tonal in Stormy with size 10.5 needles.
CO 53, longtail.
Row 1: k1, *k1, yo, k3, slip 1 kw, k2tog, pass slipped st over, k3, yo; rep from * to end across to last 2 sts, k1, k1
Rows 2, 4, 6, and 8: purl across
Row 3: k1, *k2, yo, k2, slip 1 kw, k2tog, pass slipped st over, k2, yo, k1; rep from * to end across to last 2 sts, k1, k1
Row 5: k1, *k3, yo, k1, slip 1 kw, k2tog, pass slipped st over, k1, yo, k2; rep from * to end across to last 2 sts, k1, k1
Row 7: k1, *k4, yo, slip 1 kw, k2tog, pass slipped st over, yo, k3; rep from * to end across to last 2 sts, k1, k1

Rep these last 8 rows until you have the desired length. BO loosely, I used JSSBO. I left a fairly long tail here, so that I could see the two ends together to make a cowl. I blocked this scarf because it's wool, and to open up the lace. I just wet it and then pinned it out in the rectangle shape. After it was dry, I seamed it together. Weave in any remaining tails.
The blocking really helped this lace. The drape is fantastic afterwards too. I've never used this yarn before, and I was pleasantly surprised!
My finished cowl is 13" wide and 40" around.
Enjoy this pattern!
Xoxo, Alyssa

  1. Can you tell me what is the gauge of this pattern. Also, I live in Canada and want to know if the needle size is a US measurement or mm. (10.5) The pattern is very lacy and I am not familiar with the yarn but being a single ply, I am thinking that the needle size is a small mm size. Also, what does JSSBO mean. Thank you.

    1. JSSBO is Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off. I don't normally gauge scarves, just because I don't find hat it matters much, but I have about 4 sts and 5 rows to the inch. The needle size is US. This is also a worsted weight yarn, just in case you look up the yarn. They still the Preciosa is fingering and worsted.

    2. I to am in Canada and have learned after 40 or so years knitting that if the needle size is not followed by "mm" it is usually us-this would be a 6.5 mm needle for us and the yarn is a worsted weight or a #4 if you go by the yarn weight system.

  2. I'm a reader and don't know the answer to the needle question, though my guess is, U.S. size. But JSSBO is Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off. Here's a youtube video for you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ol8aZ7z_ISs

    1. Yes, I use US sizes. Since learning JSSBO, I use it all the time, on almost all of my projects.

  4. This is gorgeous, elegant, and stunning! I can't wait to finish my current project so I can go on the hunt for the "just right" yarn to create this cowl. I love the Stormy and may use it but I was thinking a little glitter might just add a little extra bling-bling to an already perfect work of art!!!

  9. Hi, I am fairly new knitter, but my work keeps increasing.row 1 pattern has 2yo, but only 1 k2tog each time you do the work in the parenthesis. I
What am I reading incorrectly. Thanks in advance

    1. If you reread row 1, you should see that you have to sl 1 st, then k2tog, then pass the slipped st over. This will decrease two stitches for every pattern repeat, making the number of stitches stay the same.

  10. Hi,

did you use fingering or worsted weight in the yarn. Thanks so much for a beautiful cowl/pattern.

    2. Darn, I didn't read these comments until after I already ordered Knit Picks Preciosa Tonal in FINGERING weight, because that's what came up first when I googled "Knit Picks Preciosa Tonal". They have Stormy in both the fingering and worsted, and both are single ply, so I suggest you emphasize that you used the worsted (and not the fingering weight) in your instructions to avoid further confusion. Thanks for this pattern, can't weight to start when I get the right yarn.

  13. This is such a goeous pattern ! But I want to use "Vanna's Glamour' yarn. It is 96% acrylic, 4% metallic polyester. It is categorized as # 2 / fine and recommends size 5 / 3.75mm knitting needles. Do you think this yarn is a good substitute for the yarn you used ? Do you think I will have problems with the edges curling ? I sure hope I can use this pattern on the Vanna's Glamour yarn! Regardless, THANK YOU for the beautiful pattern!

    1. This yarn was about worsted weight, but I think you could use Vanna's Glamour too, maybe with size 7 or 8 needles to get a drape similar to mine? I don't think the edges will curl that much if you use the bigger needles, but maybe you could add a few garter stitches on either side to help with that.
      Glad you like the pattern!

  17. Hi Alyssa, I’d love to add this cowl to a fingering weight sweater I’ve just made. How do you think it would look in a fingering weight? What size needle would you recommend? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I used a needle size two or three bigger than would usually be used for worsted, so I would suggest going by that. Maybe an 8 would work? You could also add multiples of ten if you would like to make it wider.

      Delete
  18. Thanks Alyssa. I appreciate your help. Just wondering, if I use 2 strands of the fingering (ie to double the weight), would that look OK or do you think the 2 strands would separate a little in some of the Yarn Over stitches? Regards Jane

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think you could use two strands, but I think you’re right that they might be noticeable with the yarn overs.

  19. How is JSSBO different from a regular bind off? Are directions listed anywhere for it?

    1. JSSBO is a stretchier bind off, which makes it nice for scarves. You can find lots of tutorials online.

  21. Hello, your patters are so pretty. I was wanting to knit this up but when I begin knitting the first row I run out of enough stitches to finish that row. I have asked my grandma to help me figure it out and she says it's supposed to be cast on 51st instead of 53st. please fix this.

    ReplyDelete
  22. For some reason whenever i try it i keep ending up with less than 53 stitches and start over, i started it and for some reason after a few rows im at 50 stitches now. I dont understand as I am literally following the pattern to a T.

    1. I'm not sure why you're losing stitches without looking at it, but you must be missing a yo or adding a k2tog somewhere. The stitch pattern is a multiple of ten with three edge stitches.

  23. Hello, I'm new to the knitting world. I'm having issues with the pattern. Whenever I read it I can only see a pattern of 12s instead of 10s. So, whenever I try the pattern even though I'm following it right (our at least I think I am) I end up at the 51st stitch being a yo in the pattern which if stitched would bring the total count up to 54 after knitting the last two k1's. I was hoping you'd be able to explain to me how it's a 10 count pattern, and if possible whata you might think I am doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated!

    1. I believe you are counting the yarnovers and the decreases as separate stitches. Each yarnover is paired with a decrease, so this is how I get the ten stitch repeat. You may also be forgetting to pass the slipped stitch over. I’m not sure which row you’re having trouble with, but say for row 1, you k 1 for the border, then you start the stitch repeat. K 1, yo, k 3, slip 1 knitwise, k2tog, pass slipped st over, k 3, yo. Then repeat until you get to the last two stitches, and k 2. The stitch repeat works out to ten stitches. The 51st stitch in the row is a yarnover, then the 52nd and 53rd are the last two edge stitches.
      Hope this helps!

  24. I just printed this pattern which was shown on All Free Knitting. Beautiful scarf!!!
Just so you know, All Free Knitting shows the Yarn Weight as "1". Knit Picks Preciosa Tonal is only available in Worsted Weight - appears to be an error on their part.
