Amethyst Triangle Shawl

This rich, purple yarn creates a lovely shawlette with an easy stitch pattern. This color reminds me of a pair of amethyst earrings I own. It is knit top down, and can be made to any size.

I used one skein of KnitPicks Hawthorne Fingering Kettle Dye in the color Goddess. I used size 5 circular needles, to accomodate the large number of stitches towards the end.

CO 3, longtail

Row 1: k across

Row 2: k1, (yo, k1) twice

Row 3: k1, yo, k3, yo, k1

Row 4: (k1, yo, k2, yo), pm, rep (to) once more, k1

Row 5: k1, yo, k to marker, sm, k to last st, yo, k1

Row 6: k1, yo, k to marker, yo, sm, k1, yo, k to last st, yo, k1

Row 7: k1, yo, k1, (k2tog, yo) rep (to) last st before marker, k1, sm, (yo, k2tog) rep (to) to last 2 sts, k1, yo, k1

Row 8: rep row 6

Rep rows 5 and 6 three times

Rep rows 7 and 8

Continue in this manner, with three pattern repeats of rows 5 and 6, and then a repeat of rows 7 and 8. This makes the eyelet stripes between sections of garter stitch.

Before binding off, do three repeats of rows 7 and 8, to make a lacy border. Knit one more row, and then bind off using JSSBO.

Weave in any tails, and block if you wish. I wet blocked this, and pinned it out to help open up the lace. Blocking it gave it a nice drape, and opened the stitches.

This little shawl is 21" deep and 65" across the top. You can easily make this bigger by using more yarn and continuing the pattern.

I hope you enjoy this shawl pattern, and make one for yourself.
XOXO, Alyssa

  2. Lovely design. However, the description says it's top dowm but looks like bottom up to me, as it starts at the point, not across the top.

    1. It starts at the center on the top, at the neck, not at the point of the triangle. I always thought this way was called top down.

    2. You are correct. I just glanced at the photos, and with my poor eyesight didn't catch the spine stitch given the darker (but lovely) color.

  3. What kind of bind off is JSSBO?

    1. The shawl starts at the top center, at the neck, and then increases outward. I always considered this to be top down.
