Coral Crocodile Cowl

This is a similar version to my popular crocodile shawl, but in a cowl form so it stays wrapped nicely around your neck.
I used 3 skeins of Knit Picks Wool of the Andes in Papaya Heather with a J hook.

If you would like the photo tutorial, please go to my crocodile shawl pattern. The beginning of this cowl is the same as that pattern.
*ch 3 counts as dc

Ch 5. Sl st into 3rd ch, ch 3
Row 1: dc 4, ch 1, dc 5 in loop
Row 2: ch 3, turn, dc into top and side of last dc of 1st petal, ch 1, dc in middle sp of 10 dc from previous row, ch 1, 2 dc into last ch of ch 3 from previous row.
Row 3: dc 5 around 1st dc, ch 1, dc 5 around next dc, sl st in next dc, dc 5 around next dc, ch 1, dc 5 around next dc.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 in the manner shown, until you have enough petals to sit around your neck. This was 14 for me.
Join two ends together with a sl st
Row 1: ch 3, turn, dc in sl st, *ch 1, dc in sp between 10 dc, ch 1, 2dc in next dc; rep from * to end to end of round, ch 1, join to 3rd ch of beg ch with st st
Row 2: turn, sl st in 1st dc, *dc 5 around next dc, ch 1, dc 5 around next dc, sl st in next dc; rep from *to end to end of round, sl st in same dc as you did in the beginning of the row.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 two more times.
The petals will move over one with each repeat of rows 1 and 2, but it doesn't make a difference when it is finished.
Fasten off, and weave in any remaining ends.
Here is the back, to show how the ends are connected and seamless.
I love the funky texture of crocodile stitch.
My finished cowl is about 15" deep, and 26" around the neck.
I hope you enjoy this pattern!
Xoxo, Alyssa

  2. Hi Alyssa!! Okay, I've been following your pattern and I finally got the hang of it but I don't understand what makes it taper to a triangle shape. I assume it's worked from the top down but I dont see where in the pattern it decreases stitches or what makes it smaller near the bottom? I'm only a confident beginner, but this is boggling my mind.

    1. The pattern increases as you go, so it is really bottom up. When it gets wide enough to wrap around your neck, then you join it.
      Hope this helps!

  4. In row 3 where it says to "DC 5 around 1st dc"; which 1st dc or which previous row is it referring to??

    1. Dc 5 around 1st dc is referring to the dc in the previous row, the first one into the row.

  5. The google search had "...the video tutorial will help you get started on this project." But I don't see a link for a video. This is going to be my next project! :)

    1. I don't make video tutorials, so not sure where it said that. I have another pattern that starts out the same way, the Crocodile Shawl pattern, and this one has a photo tutorial. Maybe you mean that? If you would like a video tutorial for crocodile stitch, I'm sure you could find one online, but I don't have one.
