Waves Scarf

This delicate lacy scarf has only a few rows to memorize for the pretty stitch. This scarf is perfect for the warmer months, and will be great to toss into your bag in case you need a little extra warmth.
I used one skein of Patons Lace in Arctic Plum with size 9 needles.
Co 56
Rows 1 and 3: knit
Rows 2, 4, and 6: purl
Row 5: k1, *p2tog 3 times, (k1, yo) 6 times, p2tog 3 times; repeat from * to end, k1

Repeat these 6 rows to form the pattern.
Bo in purl on a row 4. Fasten off, and weave in all ends.
The scarf is 10"x64".
I just love being able to wear lighter scarves! The light yarn makes for such a delicate lacy scarf.
Enjoy this pattern and share your finished scarf with me!
Xoxo, Alyssa

  2. Beautiful scarf! Thank you for sharing this post at City of Creative Dream's City of Links last Friday! I appreciate you taking the time to party with me. Hope to see you again this week :)

  3. How would I adjust the pattern to use worsted weight yarn? I think it would be too wide if I cast on 54 stitches. Thank you for any help!

    1. Base number of cast on stitches on your yarn gauge. You need an even number of stitches. So if you want an 8" wide scarf--you may want it narrower in a heavier yarn--and your yarn gauge is 20 stitches = 4", I'd do a test swatch with 40 stitches. However, it looks like Alyssa used lace wt. yarn with much larger needles than the package gauge calls for, so you might want to play around with a few needle sizes to get the effect you want.

    2. You need a multiple of 18 + 2 to keep the same pattern as I have. For a worsted weight yarn, I would recommend using size 10 or 10 1/2 needles.
As Marlene said about casting on 40 stitches, 38 stitches would work for this pattern.

  4. Very pretty feather and fan version. You have just shown me the way to my next cowl/scarf. I have some malabrigo baby alpaca that is perfect for this. Since you bead (and I don't, much) I wonder if you know a good online place to buy glass size E or 6 glass beads. All my local souces seem to be out of everything but clear. Thanks so much for posting.

    1. Either Fire Mountain Gems or ShipwreckBeads. I order from them frequently.

    2. I like Fusionbeads.com. I tend to buy the really tiny Delica or Japanese Round seed beads and Swarovski crystals. I love how they have so many color and finish options!

  5. Alyssa, it would be very helpful if you included the yarn weight classification and package gauge with your patterns. That way readers can substitute other yarns more easily. Also if you indicated in the name if it's knit or crochet. Thanks for sharing your lovely creations!

    1. This yarn is a lace weight. I believe the package says to use size 4 needles. Unfortunately all my local stores stopped carrying this brand and I don't have anymore in my stash, so K can't give you the information on this yarn. I tend not to gauge anything except garments, and on scarves, I figure it's just a scarf and anything will work.

    2. Do you realize how incredibly lazy you sound? Alyssa has included all the information needed in the pattern to substitute if necessary-Patons Lace Yarn is 498 yards, lace weight, acrylic/wool/goat mohair blend, US 4 needles are recommended for this yarn.

  6. Thank you for this version of the lace pattern! Where would you place beads? I'm just learning to bead. Thank you.

    1. I've never knitted with beads. I suppose you could look at other patterns and following those guidelines you could put beads in this pattern.

    1. Maybe you increased or decreased somewhere? I would say to go back until you have all the sts.

    2. I guess I don't know how to use profile. I am a senior. Can you tell me how many stitches you are suppose to have after row 5. I redid it and double checked the knit and yarn overs and it still does not come out. I have to be doing something wrong.

    3. I started last night, late, and it kept getting wider and wider, so I got up this morning and counted what was on my needle--way, way too many. Something is wrong with the instructions. I have started over and after row five have 66 stitches on my needle so it's going the same way.

    4. You must be forgetting some decreases, and every decrease in this pattern has an increase. You should have the same amount of stitches after every row. Try rereading the pattern and going through it again.

  8. Hi Alyssa, This senior was reading the instructions wrong. Thank you for responding and the beautiful pattern. My granddaughters will be very happy. The love scarfs. cowl, infinity and can't have enough of them. Evelyn

  9. When I work row 5 I'm doing something wrong on the YO as I come out 2 stitches short. Is there a video somewhere of this row?

    1. I don't have a video. Make sure to dc2tog for every yo.

  10. This is exactly the same pattern that I have used for a few of my knitting projects! I was about to make it into a scarf. It came from my Nanna's knitting pattern book from the 1940s. I am curious how you came across the pattern?

    1. I have a stitch book that gives me the stitches of each row and the number of stitches for the repeats. For this pattern I just used that book, then I chose the number of stitches for the width.

  11. I love this pattern and would love to knit as a circular infinity scarf. Do you know how I would adjust the pattern?

    1. You would cast on a multiple of 18, and knit the even rows.

  12. I've tried to knit this twice from the pattern given and it does not work. After row five I wind up with 66 stitches on my needle. Very pretty. I really wanted it to work but it just keeps getting wider and wider unless I drop stitches in row six and then it doesn't look like this. Sad. Waste of time too. Thanks for sharing, but. . . .

    1. Sorry you couldn't get it to work. The pattern is correct though, so you must be reading something wrong. Maybe you are forgetting the decreases, since there are two sets in the pattern of three dc2togs. It does look a bit strange, but that's how the pattern works out.

  13. I think I know what I did wrong. Sorry. I did the six YO twice in between the 2ptogether parts. Supposed to do the 2ptogether twice with six YO in between.
