This is the center stitch. Some people use two markers and place one on both sides of the center stitch, but I just use one. I’m not sure why the center stitch would be moving diagonally though. At the beginning and end of every row there is an increase and on increase rows there is also an increase the stitch before the center stitch and the stitch after, so everything is symmetrical. I keep getting the same problem, and even after hitting just my first time through row 6, I have 7 sts on one side of the marker and 9 sts on the other. As I go further through it just carries on a diagonal. In row 4 when you place the marker, it’s not even either. There’s 5 sts on one side, and then 6 sts on the other. I'm going to say the gaps are coming through on a diagonal, instead of going straight up center. Basically, I'm ending up with WAY more stitches on the one side of the marker than the other. If you use the same weight, fingering, you could use the same needle size as me and the same amount of yarn to make it the same size. Maybe to make it warmer, you could make it bigger or go down one needle size to make the fabric denser? I think it would still be warm even if you kept the needles larger, just because cashmere would be warm.
